Bahia
de Guantanamo, USA Naval Base
(CW
2001)
|
|
 |
|
| This
part of Cuba has been occupied by the USA since 1903. At the end of The
Second War of Independence between the Cuban people and Spain the USA
declared war to Spain. Soon after the USA defeated Spain in a battle
nearby Santiago de Cuba and occupied Cuba. In 1901 USA senator Orville
Platt attached a rider to the US Army Appropriations Bill of 1901 giving
the USA the right to intervene military in Cuba's internal affairs
whenever the USA decided such intervention was warranted. The Cubans
could get independence if they agreed with this so called "Platt
Amendment". in 1902 Cuba became an independent state and in 1903
the USA used the Platt Amendment to occupy Quantanamo Bay to create a
naval base. On May 29, 1934 president Franklin D. Roosevelt of the USA
arranged for the abrogation of the Platt Amendment, but extended the
lease for the naval base for 99 years. Today (2002) the base is used to
imprison supposed Al- Qaeda-terrorists, who were captured in
Afghanistan. |

|
| Bahia
de Guantanamo, You can't visit the naval base
but it's very easy to get a good look at the base. If you go to Hotel
Guantanamo, Calle 13 Norte and ask for Peter Hope, he will bring you for
around $ 10.00 (2001) to the Mirador de Malones. You will need a car to
get there and a guide to get you through the checkpoints along the way. |
