On
October 17, 1870 Jose Marti at the age of 17 arrived here to spend nine
weeks of exile on this farm prior to his deportation to Spain. He was
sheltered by the Sardá family, friends of his father. Today the farm is
a museum that exhibits objects and
things linked to this stage of life of Jose Martí.

Until
1974 this was the ferry boat between Isla de Juventud and the mainland
of Cuba. On may 15, 1955 this boat brought Fidel and the other released
Moncada prisoners to the mainland.

The
prison was built between 1926 and 1931 during the regime of president
Gerardo Machado. It is capable of accommodating 6000 prisoners. From
October 1953 to May 1955 Fidel Castro and the other Rebels who had
attacked the Moncada Barracks were imprisoned here. In 1967 the prison
was converted into a museum.
