Anju is situated near
the Chongchon River, west of South Pyongang Province. It is one of the
leading coal production centres in west Korea. The city has become a
modern industrial centre in a short time thanks to the Workers' Party of
Korea's policy of urban construction. The streets are lined with various
styles of apartment blocks. There is a 1,200-seat theatre, a four-storey
department store, the Chilsong Restaurant and other cultural and welfare
establishments. A few years ago many apartment houses were built at the
foot of the pine-wooded Tungbang Hill. Their position adds beauty to the
scenery of the city. 80 percent of the city's population are workers'
families and they live in new blocks, so the city is called a workers'
town. There are many parks and pleasure grounds, including Chilsong
Park, Yangji Park, Pukmun Park, Paeksang Park, Chongchongang Pleasure
Ground, Saenaegang Pleasure Ground, all of which are thick with trees,
whose number runs into hundreds of thousands.
