Korea, Mount Myohyang

Mount Myohyang, The International  Friendship Exhibition

friendshipg002.jpg (19041 bytes)

There is the magnificent exhibition on the bank of the clean Myohyang River at the foot of Thammil Peak 1.5 km from Hyangsan Hotel.

The international Friendship Exhibition was built in one year or so and opened on August 26, 1978.

Attracting first the eyes of the visitors are glittering green tiles on the Korean-style hip-saddle roofs, outer capitals and rafters adorned with beautiful paintings of Kimilsungia, magnolia and azalea on a light pink ground and doors in which flowers are exquisitely carved.

The 6-storeyed exhibition used no timber in the building but it looks like a wooden building with windows although there is no window. Light, temperature and humidity are automatically regulated.

Hung on each protruding eave are wind-bells in butterfly shape showing the national traditions of Korea. Faint sound drifted it by the wind enraptures visitors.

The total floor space of the exhibition is 28,000 m2. The weight of the door is 4 tons. But the heavy and bulky door is opened lightly with a hand. This makes you feel mysterious.

The exhibition has over 100 rooms. Displayed are part of over 71,000 pieces of gifts presented to the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung and over 27,000 pieces of gifts to the dear leader Comrade Kim Jong Il by heads of state and parties, figures of international organizations and bodies, political and public figures and people of every degree of numerous countries of the five continents of the world.

In the exhibition there are the introduction hall and display halls showing gifts according to each continent and country.

Displayed in the exhibition showing all treasures of the world at one place are gold and silver works, valuable special products and manual art objects made of jewels, ivory and many other materials of different  countries.

In particular, "Mangyongdae Native House" made of white ivory, Mannyon Painting "Sunrise over Mt. Paekto" relieved with shells, "Temple of Juche", model ship "Along the Course Indicated by Juche" and all other gifts draw popularity for their deep meaning and high artistic value.

It takes one whole week to go round the exhibits while hearing the explanatory lecture on each gift displayed there.

The exhibition helps deepen your understanding of Korea today.

The rock letters "Jiwon" are carved on
jiwonrock_m.jpg (45972 bytes)

If people go up about 500 m form the mouth of Sangwon Valley, they will come to have an idea of aiming high. This is because a natural rock on which the letters "Jiwon" are carved comes into view.

The lofty idea of "Jiwon" advanced by Mr. Kim Hyong Jik, father of the great leader President Kim Il Sung, means that one must aim high to achieve the independence and prosperity of the country and the freedom and liberation of the people. The two letters written in old Korean characters are copied after the hand writing of Mr. Kim Hyong Jik.
