Pyongyang / Tower of Juche Idea
The magnificent tower of Juche Idea, a great monument of our era on the bank of Taedong River flowing calmly through the heart of Pyongyang. It has been erected at the initiative of the dear leader Comrade Kim Jong Il and under his far-reaching plan and vigorous guidance. The tower was unveiled on April 15, 1982, the great leader President Kim Il Sung's 70th birthday. It is reflective of our people's firm will and aspirations to convey forever his revolutionary idea and achievements. Grand masonry and fine decorative pieces of the tower, which blends a unique architectural form with new sculptural beauty, are imbued with the warm sincerity of our people and revolutionary peoples of the world. The tower, which is made of natural white granite and crowned with a torch, is rising 170 m high. Its front and back sides are hung with the golden letters "Juche". A 20 m high torch on a plate 8 m across is spreading the rays of Juche. The torch looks like burning in the daytime but its nocturnal view, effected by an electric apparatus, is quite spectacular. The tower is symbolizing the seventy years of the great leader who propounded the immortal Juche idea and accomplished everlasting exploits in its successful application. The front and back sides of the tower are covered with 18 tiers of granite blocks respectively and its right and left sides with 17 tiers -70 tiers in all. And 25,550 pieces of white granite clothing the tower which covers 6,600 square metres, tell of the meaningful days of the great leader's seventy years. Attached to the pedestal's facade is an ode monument of granite, 4 m high and 15 m wide. There are engraved 12 stanzas in the ode monument, praising the revolutionary achievements and services of the great leader. The contents of odes and the size of the monument reflect the profound wishes of our people celebrating April 15, 1912 - the birthday of the great leader. The pedestal's sides are decorated with reliefs of Kimilsung flower and magnolia in baskets, 4m high and 18 m wide. The tower is also decorated with rare marbles sent by leaders, prominent political and public figures and adherents of the Juche idea in various countries. The tower stands in good harmony with surrounding sculptural groups, presenting a grand picture. In front of the tower there is a sculptural group of three persons over 30 m high, demonstrating the revolutionary spirit and firm will of our people advancing vigorously to accomplish the cause of Juche under the banner of the glorious Workers'  Party of Korea. Behind the tower are 6 sculptural groups, portraying the tremendous vitality of the Juche idea. On both sides of the tower stand two pavilions symmetrically. Before the tower two large fountains are seen in the middle of the river. The fountains, jetting water 150 m high, add beauty to the scenery of the tower and the river. The Tower of Juche Idea will shine forever, upheld by the desire of the glorious Party and our people to convey through generations the revolutionary achievements of the great leader.
