Wonsan, a modern port city on the east coast, is the political, economic
and cultural centre of Kangwon Province. The city had been razed to the
ground during the Fatherland Liberation War. The US imperialists dropped
13 bombs and shells per square metre on it. But the city rose from the
ashes and it has now become a beautiful tourist centre. Haean, Yokjon,
Naewonsan and Songdo Streets, which can be overlooked from Mts. Koryong
and Songbong, Song Pass and Kochun Hill are lined with various shapes of
public buildings and apartment blocks and they blend well with the
seashore scenery. The seashore and residential areas abound with parks
and pleasure grounds. Songdowon beach in particular is famous for its
scenic beauty. The city has heavy industries which produce freight cars
and ships, and light industries.
