| To Ngoc Van |
| To Ngoc Van (1906-1954) was born
in Hai Hung province. A painter, he graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts
College, second intake (1926-1931). He was one of the talented pioneers of
Vietnam’s modern fine arts. He helped to introduce Western
oil painting into Vietnam and performed great services in cultural and
training activities. Many of his words are in the Fine Arts Museum of
Vietnam and in collections abroad. He won the gold medal at the Paris Fine
Arts Exhibition of the French Painters’ Association in 1932. He was a
professor at the Indochina Fine Arts College from 1939 to 1945. He worked as the headmaster of
the Fine Arts College of Vietnam in the first war of resistance
(1950-1953). In 1954, he won the first prize
at the National Fine Arts Exhibition. He was elected as a member of the
Executive Committee of the Literature and Art Association of Vietnam. Some of his main works are ‘Two
Young Girls and a Child’ (oil, Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam) and
‘President Ho Chi Minh Working at the Residence of the Governor of
Tonkin’ (woodcut, Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam). |

| Pham Gia Giang |
| Pham Gia Giang
was born in Hanoi in 1912. He was one of the founders of Vietnamese modern
sculpture. Pham Gia Giang
rendered great service to training younger generations of sculptors. He
graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts College, tenth intake (1934-1939).
He began to study and apply lacquer relief in sculpture from 1939. Mr Giang has
works in the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam and Vatican Museum in Italy. He
was the dean of the Sculpture Department of the Fine Arts College of
Vietnam for many years. Some of his main
works are ‘Happiness’ (lacquer relief, Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam)
and ‘Hero Le Minh Duc’ (gesso relief, Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam). |

| Mai Van Hien |
| Mai Van
Hien,
born in Quang Nam-Da Nang province in 1923, is a painter who specialises
in oil, gouache, caricature and illustration. He studied at the Indochina
Fine Arts College, 17th intake from 1943 to 1948. He
contributed a great service to arts development. He won the third
prizes at the national fine arts exhibitions, in 1946 and 1948, the first
prize, in 1954, and the second prize, in 1958. He was also the winner of
the first prize at the fine arts exhibition of war and revolution in 1989
and a consolation prize by the Vietnamese Association of Figurative
Artists in 1993. He was a member
of the Standing Committee of the Vietnamese Fine Arts Association, from
1957 to 1983. Some of his main
works are ‘Meeting’ (gouache, Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam) and
‘Singing in the Days of the Military Campaign’ (mixed technique). |

| Nguyen Sang |
|
|
|
Nguyen Sang was
born in Tien Giang province in 1923 and died in 1988. He was a talented
painter, one of the distinguished later graduates from the Indochina Fine
Arts College, 14th intake from 1940-1945. He was the creator of
many monumental compositions on revolution. He succeeded in
oil and lacquer paintings with a strong style and great ideological
vision. His works draw the attention of audiences. Many his works
are kept in private collections at home and abroad. He was a member
of the Executive Committee of the Vietnamese Fine Arts Association, 1st
tenure, from 1957-1983. He had his first
individual show held in Hanoi in 1984. One of his main
works is ‘Party Member’s Admission in Dien Bien Phu Battle’ (lacquer,
Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam).

Nguyen Sy Ngoc |
| Nguyen Sy Ngoc
was born in Hanoi in 1919 and died in 1990. He was a painter, who worked
mainly with lacquer and silk. He made contributions to teaching,
illustration and art review. He graduated from
the Indochina Fine Arts College, 13th intake from 1939 to 1944.
He won the prize
at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1951 and 1954. He was a deputy
general secretary of the Vietnamese Fine Arts Association from 1957 to
1958 and worked as a lecturer at the Fine Arts College of Vietnam for many
years. Some of his main
works are ‘The Friendship of the People and the Army’ (lacquer, Fine
Arts Museum of Vietnam) and ‘Worker’s Shift Continuation’ (lacquer,
Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam).

| Nguyen Hiem
was born in South Vietnam in 1917 and died in 1976. He was an army
painter. Nguyen Hiem
graduated from the Gia Dinh Fine Arts College. He worked mainly with
lacquer and gouache. He left not many paintings, but those we have are
outstanding works of war themes created with an experienced and sensitive
style. Some of his
works are in the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam. He participated in fine arts
exhibitions at home and in some Eastern European countries. Some of his
main works are 'Tam Vu Combat' (gouache, the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam)
and 'March across a Monkey Bridge' (lacquer, the Fine Arts Museum of
Vietnam). |

| Pham Van Don was born
in Hanoi in 1917. He was a
graduate of the Indochina Fine Arts College, 13th intake class
(1939-1944). Specialising in carved
painting, Pham Van Don tends to study and utilise Vietnamese traditional
painting. He has works in the
Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam, museums of Germany, Russia, Hungary, and in
private collections abroad. He was the
prize-winner at the 'Salon Unique' Fine Arts Exhibition in 1943 and National
Fine Arts Exhibition in 1951. He worked as a
lecturer at the Fine Arts College of Vietnam from 1957 to 1989. Pham Van Don won the
grand prize 'Intergrafik' in the Democratic Republic of Germany in 1980, an
A-class prize at the Graphic Exhibition for the 1975-1985 period in Hanoi
and the second prize at the Contest of Illustrations for Children's Books in
Sweden in 1985. He was a co-organiser
of Joint Exhibitions with sculptor Nguyen Thi Kim in Hanoi in 1986 and 1993
in Poland in 1988 and in Bangkok in 1993. One of his main works is 'Partisan-Miners of Canh Duong Village' (lithograph). |

| Ta Thuc Binh was born in
Ha Bac province in 1917. He was a painter, who
studied at the Indochina Fine Arts College, 15th intake
(1941-1945). For many years, he worked as a lecturer at the Hanoi Fine
Arts College. He specialises in silk
paintings, illustrations and pictorial stories. Mr Binh has paintings at
the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam. He was the winner at the National Fine
Arts Exhibitions in 1951 and 1954. Some of his main works
are ‘Harvest Time’ (gouache) and ‘Bringing Rice into the
Warehouse’ (silk, the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam). |

| Nguyen Duc Nung
was born in Ha Tay province in 1914 and died in 1983. He was an artist
and professor. He specialised in lacquer painting. Nguyen Duc Nung led
traditional lacquer painting toward European realism. Nguyen Duc Nung
graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts College, 11th entering
class (1933-1938). He has works in
the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam, the Moscow Museum of Oriental Arts. He was the chief
editor of the following books: ‘Art under the Ly Dynasty’ (Culture
Publishing House, 1973), ‘Art under the Tran Dynasty’ (Culture
Publishing House, 1973) and ‘Art at the Beginning of the Le Dynasty’
(Culture Publishing House, 1978). Nguyen Duc Nung
was the director of the Fine Arts Institute from 1978 to 1980) and a
lecturer at the Fine Arts College of Vietnam for many years. Some of his main
works are ‘Thread Rolling’ (lacquer, the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam)
and ‘Dawn on the Farm’ (lacquer, the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam). |

| Hoang Tich Chu |
| Hoang Tich Chu (1912) was born in
Ha Bac province. He is a painter, specialising in lacquer painting. Hoang Tich Chu is one of the
famous artists in this genre from the first generation of Vietnam’s
modern art. He graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts College, eleventh
entering class (1935-1941). Mr Chu has paintings in the Fine
Arts Museum of Vietnam, Moscow Museum of Oriental Arts and some in private
collections. He became a lecturer at the Fine
Arts College of Vietnam from 1956 to 1969. In 1957 and 1960, he won the
third prizes at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, and was presented
congratulatory certificates at the International Exhibitions in Germany,
Poland and India. Mr Chu became the head of the
Hanoi Institute of Art Handicraft during 1969-1970. Some of his main works are
‘Labour Co-operative Group in Mountainous Area’ (lacquer, Fine Arts
Museum of Vietnam) and ‘Carrying Home Harvested Rice’ (lacquer, Fine
