(Nhan Dan, May 2 2001)

Public meetings and cultural activities have been held throughout the country in recent days to celebrate the 26th anniversary of the liberation of south Vietnam on April 30 and the 115th anniversary of International Labor Day on May 1st. A meeting to mark the events was held in Ho Chi Minh City on April 30. Addressing the meeting, chairman of the district One's People's Council affirmed "Vietnamese people should do our utmost to deserve contributions made by our beloved Uncle Ho, war martyrs and predecessors who devoted their whole life to struggle for the national liberation. We, therefore, should promote the national tradition and do our best to fight against poverty and backwardness and strengthen our country's influence in the highly competitive environment of the world." In the same evening, thousands of young people took part in a gala to celebrate the Victory Day. On the occasion, the Cinematography Department of the Ministry of Culture and Information organized a Vietnamese film show in Hanoi and many other provinces. Many other cultural and sport activities were held in the capital city. The Confederation of Labor and the Department of Physical Education and Sport of Hanoi opened a badminton tournament for workers and a cycling tour for the elderly in the city.
