National pride: Top Vietnamese Party and State leaders on Friday paid a tribute to the late President Ho Chi Minh, laying flowers at his mausoleum to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the August Revolution, and National Day on September 2. Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, President Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An also laid a wreath at the Ha Noi Martyrs’ Monument, for those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence and freedom.

Country celebrates August Revolution, National Day

Hanoi. The 57th Anniversary of the August Revolution, and National Day on September 2, were celebrated with pomp throughout the country.

Ha Noi held a grand celebration at the Friendship Palace on Saturday, in which several top leaders and stalwart revolutionaries participated.

Among them were Communist Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An, and veterans Do Muoi, Le Kha Phieu, Le Duc Anh, Vo Nguyen Giap.

Ha Noi Mayor Hoang Van Nghien extolled the glorious August revolution which ushered in a new era of independence, freedom and socialism.

"The city and its people have made huge efforts to surmount difficulties and maintain an economic growth rate higher than the national average," Nghien said in praise of the capital.

He reported that in the last two months, the city economy continued developing towards a balanced industry-service-agriculture structure with living standards improving and social order and security reinforced.

He listed the tasks that remained in the agenda for the year, promising every effort to fulfil them – developing services and exports, enhancing urban management and development, speeding up land clearance for housing and other major projects and promoting social-cultural activities.

Similar celebrations were held in HCM City’s Binh Chanh District on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, the People’s Committee Deputy Chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai said the city will bring into full play the glorious tradition of great unity, creativeness, and dynamism to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.

Impressive commemoration were also held in provinces and cities all over the country to mark the occasion.
