The War of the
USA against the nationalists and Communists in Vietnam, which lasted
from 1950 until 1975. The first USA-soldiers arrived in Vietnam in 1950
as part of the US Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) for
instructing troops receiving USA-weapons. The last USA-troops left
Vietnam in 1975. |

Liberation Front (NLF) |
In 1960 the
government of North Vietnam announced the formation of the National
Liberation Front (NLF). The NLF called for a neutralization of Vietnam,
the withdrawal of all foreign groups and the gradual reunification of
North and South Vietnam. |

In South
Vietnam derogatorily the National Liberation Front (NLF)
became known as Viet Cong (or VC), an abbreviation for Viet Nam Cong
San, which means Vietnamese Communist. |

Minh |
In 1941 Ho Chi Minh formed the League
for the Independence of Vietnam (Viet Nam Doc Lap Dong Minh Hoi), better
known as the Viet Minh. This organization resisted the Japanese occupation
of Vietnam. During the end of the Second World War it was supported by China and the
USA ( The OSS (predecessor of
the CIA) supplied the Viet Minh with money and arms from 1944). |
