According
to the leaflet "The
Mausoleum of President Ho Chi Minh is an architectural work of great
political and ideological importance for the Vietnamese
people".
The construction of
the Mausoleum started in September 1973 on the foundations of the old
rostrum in Ba Dinh Square where president Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration
of Independence on 2 September 1945. The mausoleum was completed nearly 2 years later on
29 August 1975. On the front of the
Mausoleum is engraved "Chu Tich Ho Chi Minh," meaning
"President Ho Chi Minh". You can watch Uncle Ho's dead body laying
in a glass coffin, dressed in his faded
khaki clothes and plain rubber shoes.

Since
countries like France and the USA turned Vietnam in one big battlefield,
a lot of history museums in Vietnam really look like some army museum.
On the other hand some army museums look like a history museum. The army
museum in Hanoi is one of the better examples. Although an army museum,
it has a lot of nice displays which give you a good expression of the
recent history of Vietnam. Impressive is the cupboard with the helmets of USA-pilots, shot down during the war.

Hilton (Hoa Lo Prison)
(CW
2000) |
 |
The Hoa Lo prison was created by the French, during their colonization
of Vietnam. It was nicknamed "Hanoi Hilton" by the
USA-soldiers, because many Prisoners of War (POW) were held here during
the Vietnam War. Most of the POW's were pilots shot down while bombing
North Vietnam. Today a large part of the complex has been demolished. A
small museum tells the story of the way the French held their prisoners. |

This museum is
located near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. It was completed on May 19, 1990,
on the occasion of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday. The museum
is housed in a four storey building covering a total area of 10,000 square
meters. The museum is designed in the shape of a lotus flower, as a symbol
of President Ho’s noble character. The main showroom
displays more than 2,000 documents, articles, pictures, and exhibits
illustrating not only historical events that took place in President Ho
Chi Minh’s life, but also important events that occurred in the rest of
the world since the end of the 19th century. The museum also
contains other rooms such as a library, a large hall, meeting rooms, and
research rooms. Since its
opening, the museum has welcomed millions of local and international
visitors.

|
This
museum tells the story of the Vietnamese Revolution. Like many of these
kinds of museums the story of the Revolution is good, but the museum is a little
bit boring. Room after room (29 altogether) you will see artifacts (papers,
photos, banners, etc.) of the Revolution. All this with only a Vietnamese explanation.
But wandering through the museum, you can enjoy the show-cases as
symbols of the curators' zeal. More and more people discover the
museum as the different leaflets of the museum in 2000 and 2002 show
(push the link below).
