In
the end of the XIXth century, in order to cope with the more and
more increasing fighting movement of Vietnamese people, French
colony reinforced its suppression apparatus by polices, courts
and prisons... Then Hoa Lo Prison was built in 1986, which was
the biggest one of the Northern Indo-China.
From
a reputed traditional profession-village, this Hoa Lo land
became a place to imprison and ground down thousands of patriots
and revolutionary fighters physically and spiritually. Many of
them sacrificed their lives to independence and freedom of the
nation.
Kept
in prison cells with chains, bar-handed patriots and
revolutionists yet fought against draconian custody regime,
harsh living and savage suppression by the French colony; kept
high sense of purpose and uprightness stand; turned the prison
into a revolutionary school; sought every way to escape from
jail and return to the people, revolutionary organizations, and
make worthy contribution to the revolution.
The
North was liberated in October 1954 and Hoa Lo prison was used
by the Vietnam State to imprison legal violators. From August 5,
1964 to March 31, 1973, the Hoa Lo prison kept a part of the
American pilots which planes had been shot down while bombing,
bombarding and causing crimes to North Vietnam people.
Since
1993, in order to make response to the development's requirement
of the Capital, Vietnam Authority had decided to change the Hoa
Lo scope of use: a part of the Hoa Lo prison (facing Hoa Lo
street) is sustained to be restored, upgraded and it has been
recognized as a Historic Relic; the other part is to be built up
to become a Business Center. |
